At the Sandwich

What's a normal gig in London? What's a 'gig' even?
Is it a rowing boat? Is it a kind of fishing spear?
The dictionnary (hum hum let's clear our throat for a sec') describes it as an engagement of a musician for a single appearance. In London I have heard it been used quite naturally meaning a 'place', a 'moment' of shared performance. An interaction rather than a one-sided effect to a performance... Or is it actually standing for our own moment of pleasure, our own consensus in this finite sense? I don't want to be too critical of this hedonistic culture (mostly because I still have one year and a half to do here), or even pointing my finger at it as 'hedonistic'. It doesn't make sense, what's more it's realistic to be inclusive of such habits.
The question is: once you're in there, then what?!?!
Turning things fast forward, but down at the same time; talks, encounters, exchange, shrill craziness, flashes all over the dance-floor, smoke (well that shows how outdated the picture is! We don't have to bother about smoke anymore...) and beer all over our shoes.
So Back to our initial question, Sandwich (aka the Goldsmiths gIg) - what kind of gig?
Who the hell writes in the Student paper that it is one of London's most desired night out!?
I'm sorry about the bias, but everyone there has a perfect knowledge of the quality of the place, and its deploringly poor DJ, who has been playing the same tracks for 2 years now - well that's what you call a fashionable place, in a fashionable and creative University...
But wait a minute, I know what they're gonna throw at our face:
"But listen, mate, that's the whole point, for a bit of fun, you need a bit of funny, so why not be stupid and repetitive?! It's working too, isn't it?"
Don't throw that post-modernism at my face, I still trust people have other engagements towards their union, their campus, the college events, and enough sociability to bare with their friends for a night-out!
But anyway, the question is as squeezed as a leaf of salad in a bigmac...
